Drone carrying an explosive device found at Leipzig/Halle Airport
Police officers discovered a drone on the tarmac carrying an explosive device during a night shift at Leipzig/Halle Airport. A computer‑controlled robot was immediately deployed to extract the detonator safely.
The device was in the vicinity of parked Antonov planes used for Ukrainian cargo and of an army military hub. The explosive was neutralised in a controlled explosion, allowing the northern runway to resume operations at 01:55 UTC; the southern runway remains closed.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt warned that the incident illustrates a "professional, hybrid threat" and suggested the investigation could point to a competition that may involve foreign powers, though no suspects were named.
Russia has not commented on the incident, yet Ukrainian Ambassador Oleksii Makeiev has indicated Moscow could be responsible. The incident follows a series of suspicious drone flights at German military sites, airports, and energy terminals since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Security experts note that previous parcel fire incidents at Leipzig/Halle, including those involving electronic timers hidden in massage pillows, and the recent discovery of suspicious drones emphasise a growing vulnerability in the aviation supply chain.
The high alert level at German airports reflects fears that state or non‑state actors could target military and commercial aviation assets to disrupt supply lines during the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
