Poland Accuses Russian Military Helicopter of Violating its Airspace

A single Russian Mi‑8 helicopter from the Kaliningrad exclave crossed into Polish airspace for 42 seconds on Wednesday, prompting Warsaw to scramble fighter jets and alert its ground forces. Polish military radar tracked the aircraft as it drifted 300 metres inside the airspace north of Braniewo.

The incident is described by Polish officials as a deliberate test of NATO’s air‑defence readiness. Moscow has not yet replied to the allegation. Poland says the intrusion reflects a broader pattern of Russian hybrid attacks aimed at destabilising Europe while keeping the cease‑fire line in Ukraine intact.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has warned that Russia may launch drone and missile strikes along the entire eastern flank of NATO, citing recent drone attacks on Ukrainian railway infrastructure. Similar incidents have been reported in Germany, Lithuania and other European countries, all pointing to a rising suspicion that Russian influence underpins a range of covert assaults.

With the conflict in Ukraine still ongoing, the Polish incursion adds fresh tension to the already strained relations on the border, especially as Warsaw remains on alert for any further incursions or hybrid warfare tactics. The incident is likely to prompt further diplomatic friction and to heighten NATO’s vigilance.
