In brief

In a shocking incident on April 12, 2025, armed paramilitary forces in Sudan executed the staff of a medical clinic serving the Zamzam camp, contributing to an estimated death toll exceeding 100 individuals.

Authorities and humanitarian organizations reported that Sudanese paramilitaries associated with the Rapid Support Forces (R.S.F.) descended upon the Zamzam camp, a refuge for approximately 500,000 people located in El Fasher, North Darfur. The camp has been under attack amid a devastating civil war that has already witnessed an array of atrocities and genocidal acts. The brutal assault began with extended shelling on the evening of April 11 before paramilitaries breached the camp's defenses. They proceeded to demolish hundreds of residences and the central market before targeting the camp's last medical clinic. According to Relief International, the NGO managing the facility, all nine medical personnel on the site – including the lead physician – were killed. "The magnitude of this tragedy is unimaginable," expressed Kashif Shafique, the Sudan director for Relief International, who revealed that their personnel included five medics and four drivers. The staff were reportedly warned a day prior to abandon the clinic but chose to remain in order to aid civilians wounded in prior shelling, despite most escape routes being blocked. This horrific event highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Darfur, raising alarms over the safety of aid workers and the desperate needs of civilians amidst escalating violence.
