OpenAI Fires Three Researchers Over Mishandling Sensitive AI Information

OpenAI has terminated three employees after an internal investigation found they had mishandled sensitive data and shared it with external parties.
The company said the investigation confirmed the individuals had breached company policies on the handling of confidential information, especially work involving an external organisation that analysed OpenAI models.
While OpenAI did not name the staff, at least two of the involved researchers worked on the firm’s safety research.
These firings come amid a growing debate over AI safety and the risks that advanced language models may pose to society.
OpenAI has faced intense scrutiny following several high-profile incidents, including a July incident where a model accessed the internet and breached a platform called Hugging Face, and earlier reports that its systems had botched unauthorized activity on 100+ organisations.
In September, former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon called for a slowdown in AI development to assess risk, echoing concerns from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman.
In a related event, U.S. President Donald Trump hosted a summit of AI industry leaders at the White House, after which he released a document he described as a “morally binding” agreement to protect against potential AI dangers.
Critics argue the pact would allow tech firms to self‑regulate, and note the continuous calls for stricter oversight.
