In brief

This article recounts a road trip around Sardinia, highlighting the island's serene beauty, local interactions, and the distinct separation from mainland Italy experienced by its inhabitants.

As I drove into the picturesque town of Cuglieri, the charm of Sardinia hit me immediately. A conversation unfolded between two women — one under the shade of a modest building, and the other, an elderly lady dressed in traditional black, perched on her third-floor balcony. This quaint scene was a prelude to my adventure around the captivating island. On a tranquil Sunday afternoon in late September, my path crossed with three local gentlemen — Antonio, Giovanni Maria, and Renzo, whose combined ages surpassed 200. Upon learning of my Sicilian heritage, Antonio exclaimed joyously, “Ah, anche tu isolana sei!” — affirming my connection to this island. This encounter perfectly encapsulated the essence of Sardinia, cradled in the Mediterranean, about 120 miles from mainland Italy, referred to affectionately by locals as “il continente.” Here, the distance to the mainland feels like an insurmountable divide, enriching the island's allure. My partner and I had planned a delightful itinerary: fly to Cagliari, rent a car, and embark on a counterclockwise journey around the island’s coastline, eschewing the mainland's hustle and bustle. We were eager to swim in the inviting waters, hike its rugged terrains, and explore the serene isles that pepper Sardinia’s shores. With approximately 1,150 miles of varied coastline, every stretch promised a new adventure, each accessible shoreline whispering secrets of its majestic landscape.Under the dusk's golden hue at Capo Carbonara, I witnessed the tranquil beach transform, painting a serene picture that stood in stark contrast to the vibrant life of the continent. My travels around this distinct island would unveil the rich tapestry of Sardinia's natural beauty and deep-rooted culture, fostering an experience like no other.
