SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A coordinated crackdown has led to the arrest of over two dozen members and associates of the Mexican Mafia across Southern California, with authorities revealing a web of criminal activities tied to the infamous gang.

In a series of early morning raids on Thursday, the FBI and various federal and local agencies executed search and arrest warrants at approximately 30 locations, mostly in Orange County, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

A total of 43 individuals have been charged, with indictments for crimes including murder, kidnapping, extortion, illegal gambling operations, and drug trafficking. Prosecutors emphasized that among those indicted were individuals already in custody.

Law enforcement officials were able to seize significant amounts of illegal substances, including 120 pounds (54 kilos) of methamphetamine and more than 8 pounds (4 kilos) of fentanyl, alongside 25 firearms and over $30,000 in cash. The substances taken off our streets are extremely dangerous, said First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli. These individuals demonstrate no regard for human life and are solely motivated by profit.

The Mexican Mafia, which has roots dating back to the 1950s in California youth detention facilities, has evolved into a powerful international criminal organization. It is known for controlling various illicit operations, including drug smuggling, distribution, and extortion, often from within California's penal system.

According to court documents, one incarcerated leader was able to use contraband cell phones to coordinate the gang's activities from prison, directing street gang members to engage in violent crimes, including kidnappings and assaults. The indictment mentions drug sales involving substances such as fentanyl, meth, heroin, and cocaine.

The organized crime network was reported to operate illegal gambling businesses out of commercial strip malls and private residences, collecting extortion payments and using violence to protect these illicit operations. Furthermore, they are suspected of involvement in a murder at a motel in Anaheim that was under gang control.

The arrested individuals are expected to make initial court appearances in federal court later today in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.
