Rapper Tory Lanez has been taken to a medical facility following a stabbing incident at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi. The incident occurred early Tuesday morning when Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was attacked by another inmate. According to California Department of Corrections spokesperson Pedro Calderón Michel, prison staff responded immediately, activating 911 and providing medical assistance before transporting Lanez to a local hospital.
While the exact nature of Lanez's injuries has not been disclosed, sources indicate they are non-life threatening. The California corrections department is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack, which took place around 7:20 AM local time.
Lanez is serving a 10-year sentence after being convicted in 2023 for three felony charges, including assault with a semi-automatic firearm, stemming from the shooting of fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion during a party in 2020. The confrontation arose over an argument regarding their past romantic relationship, with Thee Stallion testifying that Lanez fired gunshots near her while yelling for her to "dance." She subsequently required surgery to remove bullet fragments from her foot.
The trial drew significant attention and divided opinions within the hip-hop community, prompting reactions from various artists, including 50 Cent and Iggy Azalea, who publicly expressed their views on the trial and sentencing. Despite the legal ramifications, Lanez remained defiant, refusing to express remorse and maintaining his innocence throughout the process. He has also hinted at releasing a new album titled "Peterson" from behind bars, as he previously enjoyed considerable commercial success with seven top 10 albums in the years leading up to his conviction.
