Pop star Lizzo is celebrating a legal victory after a judge dismissed allegations of fat-shaming from a 2023 lawsuit filed by three of her former dancers.
The singer, known for her body positive anthems like Good As Hell and Juice, shared her thoughts on the development through a video posted on Instagram and TikTok.
There was no evidence that I fired them because they gained weight, Lizzo explained. They were fired for taking a private recording of me without my consent and sending it off to ex-employees.
Despite the dismissal of these particular allegations, the case will continue regarding claims of sexual harassment made against Lizzo and her production team.
In her statement, Lizzo's legal team labeled the lawsuit a fabricated sob story, although a judge in Los Angeles previously allowed the case to advance. Former dancers Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams, and Noelle Rodriguez allege they were coerced into attending sexually explicit shows and interacting with naked performers between 2021 and 2023.
Arianna Davis claimed that Lizzo pressured her to touch the breasts of a dancer at a nightclub in Amsterdam, which she initially refused but eventually complied with, fearing repercussions for her position on the team.
The lawsuit entails other questionable demands, including requests for dancers to engage in explicit activities at sex clubs. Lizzo's legal representative argued that these outings were part of the singer's creative process and protected by First Amendment rights. However, opposing counsel disagreed, emphasizing the distinction between artistic influence and inappropriate pressure.
Lizzo's attorney, Melissa Glass, reiterated that the dancers could not substantiate their claims, contrasting them with testimonies from numerous witnesses supporting Lizzo's stance. The singer stated that the fat-shaming allegations had severely impacted her for the past two years, asserting her commitment to fighting the legal battle and supporting body positivity.
Thanking her legal team, Lizzo emphasized, I am not settling. I will be fighting every single claim until the truth is out.
