Heatwave toll rises in Japan
Japan is facing worsening summer heat. In the past two months more than 53,000 people have been treated for heatstroke, with 79 deaths reported.
The Do Hiemon – a human‑fridge unit
The Do Hiemon, which roughly translates to "The Cooling Box", is being rolled out in public spaces and is also available for purchase by businesses. Each unit costs 1.5 million yen (approximately $9,407).
Design inspired by freezer vending boxes
CEO Testsuya Nakayama told the BBC that the design was inspired by freezer vending machines. He described the unit as a portable, refrigerated zone that cools people as they hold their bodies inside.
Tokyo correspondent trials the device
BBC’s Tokyo correspondent Kurumi Mori tried out the device on the ground, finding it a relief for those battling the heat.
