James Burrows, the landmark director behind America’s beloved sitcoms, has died at 85.
Best known as co‑creator of Cheers, his direction graced more than 1,000 episodes of Friends, The Big Bang Theory, Will and Grace and many other classics.
Burrows’s career, spanning five decades, earned 11 Emmy awards and 48 nominations, and he received a Directors Guild of America Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.
The actor who played Will on Will and Grace said Burrows left an “incredible legacy,” while actress Lisa Kudrow thanked him on Instagram for everything.
Born in Los Angeles in 1940, he grew up in New York and studied at Yale School of Drama, where he discovered his passion for directing.
His influence is still felt through the humor and structure of modern sitcoms, and his mentors continue to honor him as a generous, warm colleague.
