In brief

As violence escalates in Kashmir, Gulf states are leveraging their diplomatic ties to defuse tensions brought on by accusations and military actions between India and Pakistan.

Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states have ramped up diplomatic efforts to defuse an intensifying conflict between India and Pakistan, ignited by a recent terrorist attack in Kashmir. With the United States largely absent from this latest diplomatic crisis, influential players like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are stepping forward to mediate the dispute. For two weeks, tensions have mounted after India accused Pakistan of involvement in a deadly terror attack on April 22, claiming the lives of several nationals on the Indian-controlled side of Kashmir. In retaliatory airstrikes on Wednesday, India struck targets within Pakistan as well as regions of Kashmir overseen by Pakistan, triggering alarms from the international community. In response to the escalating violence, senior Saudi diplomat Adel al-Jubeir has been actively engaging with both Indian and Pakistani leadership, visiting New Delhi on Thursday and Islamabad the following day. Meanwhile, Pakistani officials revealed ongoing dialogues with diplomats from various other Gulf nations, including Kuwait and the UAE. Iran's foreign minister has also undertaken visits to both countries, signaling a broader regional concern over the conflict. The longstanding ties between Gulf states and both South Asian nations amplify the importance of these diplomatic interventions. Millions of Indian expatriates contribute to robust economic exchanges, while Pakistan maintains significant military cooperation with Saudi Arabia, dating back to the 1960s.Historically, Gulf nations have played crucial roles during similar escalations. In 2019, in the aftermath of Indian airstrikes in response to aggressive actions from Pakistan, both the UAE and Saudi Arabia dispatched top officials to urge calm. Notably, past meetings in Saudi Arabia have included both leaders—Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan—indicating their commitment to mutual dialogue.Experts suggest that the Gulf nations view their mediation efforts as not only an assertion of regional influence but also as a strategy to safeguard their own security and economic interests. Amidst ongoing conflicts, the ability of these states to foster dialogue remains a critical element of regional stability. As the situation continues to evolve, the world watches closely to see if Gulf mediation can effectively reduce tensions and prevent further escalation between the nuclear-armed neighbors.
