Indonesia's Cibinong prison—located outside Jakarta in Bogor—was torn down after a surprise inspection revealed opulent apartments that have been allegedly used by privileged inmates.
During a routine check on 23 September, investigators discovered separate units fitted with air‑conditioning, television‑sets, refrigerators, sofas, dining tables, a gym, and even a golf‑simulator under construction.
Officials said they were meant for staff, but the sheer luxury of the apartments and the presence of luxury cars led many to conclude that the property was intended for inmates with political connections and money to pay bribes.
The demolition comes as public outrage echoes a long‑standing complaint about Indonesia's prison system—where wealthy and influential prisoners routinely enjoy perks at the expense of ordinary inmates.
The Ministry of Justice has pledged to tighten security measures and audit all prison facilities, while human‑rights groups demand a comprehensive prison‑reform bill that eliminates the possibility of bribery and ensures equal conditions for all inmates.
