A 43‑year‑old medical technician named Subhrasree Chakraborty was preparing for the first stage of a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash when a flood struck the Himalayan border on 27 August 2026. According to her husband Sudipto, the last message he received was a photograph of her Nepal immigration stamp and a note that the group was waiting to enter China.
Subhrasree had left Kathmandu at 7 am the following day. She and about thirty fellow pilgrims had crossed the Nepal border; the trek to Tibet required an in‑person check at the Chinese facility in Gyirong. After the flood erupted, all communications ceased. Sudipto received no further replies and learned of the disaster only later that afternoon.
The Nepal disaster agency reported more than 470 deaths and over 800 people unaccounted for in the zone that includes Devighat, Bidur and Nuwakot, areas close to the Chinese border. Rescue efforts on the Tibetan side are hampered by inaccessible terrain.
Other pilgrims, such as 54‑year‑old private tutor Rina Banerjee, also disappeared under similar circumstances. Both women had cleared Nepal immigration and were presumed to have crossed into China, but their families have not received any confirmation of rescue or death.
Families insist on official lists from the Chinese government that identify the missing, rescued and deceased. Until such records are released, the fate of Subhrasree and her companions remains a heartbreaking question for their loved ones.
