In brief

In a remarkable turnaround, Uruguay has voted back a center-left government, with Yamandú Orsi defeating the incumbent party and promising a fresh approach.

In the latest development of Uruguay's political scene, Yamandú Orsi, a former mayor and educator, has emerged victorious in the presidential election, effectively shifting the country's leadership back to the center-left. After a tightly contested runoff on Sunday, incumbent Álvaro Delgado, the candidate for the ruling National Party, opted to concede even before all the votes were tallied.“Though it’s with sadness, I congratulate the winner,” Delgado expressed, reflecting the amicable tone that characterized the election. With just about half the ballots counted, Orsi was leading with approximately 784,523 votes, against Delgado's 771,434 votes. This result spells the end of a brief term for the right-leaning government that has ruled since 2020, which came after a 15-year period dominated by the Broad Front. The outgoing President Luis Lacalle Pou acknowledged his defeat, reaching out to Orsi to extend his congratulations and indicating a willingness to support a smooth transition. He emphasized the importance of unity, stating he would offer assistance in the coming weeks. The Broad Front celebrated the victory as a return of "joy" to the governance of Uruguay, hinting at a renewed commitment to progressive policies that have previously marked their administration, including the legalization of same-sex marriages and marijuana sales. With this electoral outcome, expectations are high for Orsi’s leadership, which aims to restore and build upon the progressive measures established during the Broad Front's earlier tenure.
