Harvey Weinstein Receives 15‑Year Prison Term

Disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein was handed a 15‑year sentence on Tuesday after a New York jury found him guilty of committing a criminal sexual act against former assistant Miriam Haley. The case marks the second time he has been convicted and sentenced in the same matter, following the 2020 ruling that was later overturned by New York’s highest court.

In court, Haley delivered an impact statement describing the assault as “devastating” and saying it had a profound, lasting effect on her sense of safety. Weinstein, who appeared on the bench in a wheelchair, denied the allegations but apologized to anyone he might have harmed.

The indictment stemmed from an incident in 2006 when Haley, then a production assistant on ESPN's Project Runway, claimed Weinstein sexually assaulted her in his Manhattan apartment. His 2020 conviction was voided after the court concluded he had not received a fair trial. He was retried last year and again found guilty of a single offense.

Weinstein remains in a ward at New York's Bellevue Hospital, where doctors manage an array of medical issues he had brought to light during his imprisonment. Beyond the New York case, he has faced legal proceedings in California, where he was convicted in 2022 of raping an actress in 2013. His record of alleged misconduct has fueled the #MeToo movement, reshaping the industry’s accountability.

Judge Curtis Farber, who announced the sentence, criticized the former mogul: “You took what you wanted by force and you have never accepted responsibility.” As sentencing wraps the 2020–2021 courtroom drama, many observers view the outcome as a partial vindication for victims of industry harassment.
