In brief

Explosions at separate bus depots in Israel sparked urgent security measures, with leaders calling for enhanced operations against militants.

On Thursday evening, three buses exploded in parking lots across the Tel Aviv area, triggering suspicions of a coordinated terrorist effort. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, but the explosions led Israeli authorities to temporarily halt all bus and train services nationwide.Following the blasts, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promptly confirmed that the military would implement "a massive operation" targeting militant strongholds in the West Bank. Additionally, he instructed police and intelligence agencies to intensify security operations in urban areas, aimed at preventing further attacks. The explosions occurred in Bat Yam, a coastal city south of Tel Aviv, where the three affected buses were stationed. Mayor Tzvika Brot stated that investigators also discovered unexploded devices in parking facilities in Holon, nearby. In light of the incidents, he has amplified security patrols around Bat Yam, declaring the city to be on "high alert" for the duration of the weekend but reassuring the public that normal life would proceed, including school activities.Ofir Karni, the director of the Dan bus company, reported that the last passenger on one of the targeted buses noticed a suspicious bag left behind. After alerting the driver, they quickly exited the vehicle, escaping the explosion that followed shortly after their departure. The coincidental timing of the blasts, alongside an ongoing cease-fire with Hamas that seems increasingly fragile, has heightened anxieties among Israelis. The events underscore not only the immediate risks of terrorism but also the broader geopolitical tensions that continue to permeate daily life in the region.
