In brief

Following a series of attacks in Jaramana that left seven dead, residents have taken matters into their own hands, forming armed groups to protect their city, claiming the government is failing to provide adequate security.

In the predominantly Druse city of Jaramana, armed residents are taking self-defense measures into their own hands amid growing fears over sectarian violence. This surge in vigilance comes after a brutal attack on Tuesday morning by suspected Islamist militants resulted in the deaths of seven men, prompting an urgent need for security among tense locals. On Wednesday, the atmosphere in Jaramana was charged with unease as armed men patrolled the streets. Their attire varied from casual jeans to traditional Druse clothing, all bearing weapons slung across their shoulders. Roadblocks were set up by these residents, who were visibly focused on their mission of self-guarding. At the center of the turmoil was a Druse religious hall where the community grieved seven individuals, their coffins adorned with velvet, surrounded by mourning relatives. The painful scene reinforced the community's resolve to protect itself, as messages of rising tensions in nearby areas continued to circulate.“Support from the government is non-existent; we are left to fend for ourselves,” stated Ghassan Azzam, a local resident. His sentiments echo a broader frustration among residents, underscoring their determination to form a defense network. Despite the presence of a few security vehicles, most of the armed individuals seen throughout Jaramana are locals sworn to safeguard their neighborhood amidst instability. As fears over future attacks loom large, the community's self-imposed defense measures highlight the challenges residents face as they navigate an increasingly volatile post-war landscape.
