Former Olympic Canoeist Indicted for Vandalizing Washington Reflecting Pool

On June 19, 2026, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced that David Hearn, a former Olympic canoeist, was charged with vandalizing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool after a series of renovations. Police claim Hearn reached into the water and ripped a new sealant from the pool’s bottom, causing an estimated $1,000 in damage.

Hearn told BBC reporters that he only inspected the altered surface and asserted that no paint or material was destroyed. He described the arrest as arbitrary, calling the prosecution capricious.

Five other individuals were arrested for vandalism of the Reflecting Pool, and five others received federal citations. President Donald Trump called for immediate restoration work, labeling those involved as "sick, deranged people."

The Reflecting Pool, located between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, has faced long‑standing maintenance challenges, including leaks, algae growth and structural deterioration. Despite a $14 million refurbishment, problems returned soon after the pumpstones were re‑filled.
