Indianapolis (AP) — Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez was pepper-sprayed and stabbed multiple times during a late-night altercation with a 69-year-old truck driver in a downtown Indianapolis alley, leading to criminal charges filed against him, according to court records.

Video footage collected from the scene revealed that Sanchez, smelling of alcohol, confronted the truck driver after he had backed into a hotel’s loading docks. The altercation escalated outside the vehicle, prompting the driver to defensively brandish a knife to protect himself.

Sanchez suffered stab wounds to his upper right torso and was hospitalized in stable condition after the incident, as confirmed by Fox Sports. His initial court appearance is set for Tuesday in a Marion County courtroom. The truck driver, identified only as P.T., sustained a minor injury.

The affidavit reveals that as tensions rose, the truck driver feared for his life, claiming Sanchez continued to come toward him after being pepper-sprayed. This culminated in a series of stabbings when Sanchez allegedly attacked him again.

Sanchez was in Indianapolis to cover the upcoming Raiders-Colts game, but now faces charges that include battery resulting in injury and public intoxication, all misdemeanors. Law enforcement has secured a warrant to obtain Sanchez's phone and clothing for evidence collection.

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears commented on the incident, expressing concern that the altercation devolved into violence unnecessarily. He stated, What began as a disagreement between a 38-year-old former professional athlete and a 69-year-old man should not have escalated into violence or left anyone seriously injured.

During a pregame show, Fox Sports commentators like Curt Menefee and Chris Myers acknowledged Sanchez's absence and extended their thoughts and prayers for him and everyone involved.

The confrontation's origins appeared to have started when Sanchez allegedly tried to interfere with the driver’s work duties, assuming he had spoken to the hotel manager regarding the truck’s presence. The situation spiraled as Sanchez is said to have physically assaulted the driver, prompting the driver to defend himself escalating the incident into a life-threatening situation for both parties.

Mark Sanchez, known for his decade-long NFL career, including time with the New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and Washington, began his broadcasting career after retiring in 2019. Sanchez’s current status and future developments in his case remain closely monitored.
