Five more suspects have been arrested over their involvement in the Louvre heist, Paris' public prosecutor has said.

They were arrested on Wednesday night in the Paris region, Laure Beccuau's office stated. A main suspect was among those taken into custody, AFP reported. The new arrests follow partial admissions of involvement by two individuals in the audacious theft on Wednesday.

Items valued at €88 million (£76 million; $102 million) were taken from the world's most-visited museum on October 19, when four thieves broke into the building in broad daylight.

French radio station RTL updated that the jewels have not yet been recovered, according to Beccuau. She noted that DNA evidence from one of those arrested could be linked to the crime scene.

While details remain scant from investigators, the newly arrested suspects can be held for four days before they are charged or released. Authorities believe the gang may be larger than the four individuals captured on CCTV.
