Five Injured, One Critical, in Shooting at Virginia State University
Police responded to a shooting incident outside the residence halls of Virginia State University at approximately 01:28 a.m. local time on Saturday, an hour and a half after midnight. Five individuals were found with gunshot wounds and transported to local hospitals; four were reported to have non-life-threatening injuries, while one victim is in critical condition.
The university issued a statement that an emergency lockdown was temporarily implemented but has since been lifted. Although a significant police presence remains on campus, no suspects have been confirmed in custody as of the latest update. Chesterfield County Police are spearheading the investigation with support from campus security and other local law enforcement agencies.
Virginia State University, a historically black institution located just over 20 miles south of Richmond, serves around 5,000 students and aims to begin new classes on Monday. The incident has raised concerns about campus safety and the broader issue of gun violence in the United States.
