Fishermen 5 Days Adrift in Cool Box Rescued by Mexican Navy

On 19 August, the Mexican Navy delivered a dramatic rescue 150 miles off the coast of Chiapas, finding two fishermen – ages 53 and 32 – alive inside a floating container normally used to hold fish on a vessel.

The search began after the fishing cooperative lost contact with the pair on 15 August and sent out a distress call. Five days later, naval vessels located the men clinging to the cool box, which had become an unintended life raft.

Medical teams on board assessed the fishermen before they were safely transferred to medical facilities and reunited with their families.

The incident underscores the harsh conditions and risks for fishermen operating along Mexico’s rugged coastline.
