Explosive Drone Found at Leipzig Airport Sparks Security Alarm
A drone carrying an explosive device was discovered by an employee overnight at Leipzig/Halle Airport, Saxony police said.
The airport, a key logistical hub for the German military, NATO allies, and Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines, saw the drone positioned near parked Antonov transport planes. Police subsequently deployed a robotic arm to carefully extract the detonator from the device.
In a separate incident, an unidentified object collided with a cargo aircraft at the same airport, leaving the plane with minor damage after it landed in Hanover.
This event comes amid a string of unauthorized drone flights over sensitive German sites—including military bases, airports, energy terminals, seaports, and logistics firms—in recent months, prompting authorities to raise alarms about possible Russian involvement.
Federal police warned that the overflights could have been orchestrated by Russian agents. Germany’s Interior Minister Armin Schuster called the operation a “very serious security incident.” While Russia has not commented, Ukraine’s ambassador to Berlin, Oleksii Makeiev, told Welt TV: “Who else could it be but Russia?”
Flights resumed on the northern runway at 01:55 (23:55 GMT), but the southern runway— a major DHL hub—remains closed.
It follows a series of sabotages that have plagued the region. In July 2024, a parcel ignited on the ground at Leipzig Airport before it could be loaded onto a DHL cargo plane. That incident, part of a larger pattern of parcel fires across the UK and EU, involved explosive devices hidden inside vibration massage pillows timed to detonate electronically. Russian officials denied any role, and the files showed that a Chinese woman was later convicted for passing flight schedule information to a man spying for Beijing.
