Emergency crews found the wreckage and a suspected gas leak was blamed for the eruption.
Authorities have searched the rubble with excavators and thermal cameras, and injured tourists were evacuated from nearby streets.
A Greek Foreign Office spokesperson said the UK is in contact with local authorities.
