In brief
In a startling revelation, Brazilian police have detained several members of an elite army unit implicated in a 2022 assassination plot targeting Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, designed to ensure the continuation of Jair Bolsonaro's presidency.
Brazilian law enforcement took significant action on Tuesday by arresting multiple members of an elite army unit accused of conspiring to assassinate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022, shortly before he was set to assume the presidency. The plot was allegedly orchestrated to maintain Jair Bolsonaro's position after he had lost the presidential election.Among those apprehended were four military personnel, including a former close aide to Bolsonaro, and a federal police agent, as reported by an anonymous police official. Authorities disclosed that the group utilized “high-level technical military knowledge” to devise a plan aimed at eliminating Lula and his vice-presidential pick, Geraldo Alckmin, around December 15, 2022. Intimidatingly, the group also intended to target a Supreme Court justice, however, the authorities have not disclosed the specific identity of this individual. The law enforcement agency stated that detailed planning was undertaken by those under investigation, outlining the necessary human and military resources for executing these violent ambitions. A representative for Bolsonaro firmly denied any involvement his client may have had in the alleged conspiracy. According to lawyer Paulo Cunha Bueno, the former president "never agreed or participated in any type of plan of this nature."While the police have reported the arrests, they did not clarify if there was any evidence to suggest that the assassination plan against Lula and the others was thwarted or otherwise abandoned. The shocking nature of these events raises questions about political motivations and the safety of Brazilian democratic processes, further complicating the already tense political landscape in the country.
