Drone display recreates the Twin Towers over New York City

A dazzling new form of memorial unfolds above Manhattan as almost three thousand drones join forces to recreate the Twin Towers at full scale. Each drone’s LED light symbolizes one of the 2,977 victims of the September 11 attacks, turning the sky into a living tribute.

The installation, titled 2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor, is the result of a collaboration between local artists, technical producers and members of the 9/11 community – including victims’ families, survivors, and first responders. According to organisers, the performance was designed as a “commemorative public art installation” meant to honor those lost and to give the city a shared space of remembrance.

The drones flew in synchronised patterns that mirrored the original silhouettes of the Twin Towers. Viewers aboard ferries, parks or even from the street could watch the lights flicker and assemble into the iconic towers, evoking a sense of awe and collective memory.

These new‑media’s gestures highlight the power of technology to create interactive, moving memorials -- a step beyond stone statues or plaques. By making the Twin Towers visible again for the first time in twenty‑three years, the organisers sought to provide a physical, immediate, and moving touchstone for the 9/11 tragedy.
