Denmark's foreign minister has said there is a fundamental disagreement with the US over Greenland after talks at the White House. Lars Lokke Rasmussen stated the meeting with Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio was frank but constructive. However, he expressed strong opposition to President Trump's insistence on conquering Greenland, labeling it as totally unacceptable.

Rasmussen emphasized the need to protect Denmark's interests, stating, We made it very, very clear that this is not in the interest of [Denmark].

Despite the hour-long discussions yielding no major breakthroughs, all parties agreed to set up a high-level working group to explore the future of Greenland, the autonomous Danish territory. Rasmussen outlined red lines that the US must respect, asserting Denmark's position on sovereignty. The potential for increased US military presence on the island was acknowledged, with Denmark indicating a willingness to allow the extension of military bases.

The strategic importance of Greenland, particularly its geopolitical location, is highlighted amid rising concerns over missile defense and resource acquisition. Trump's administration continues to assert that Greenland is vital for US national security, despite evident opposition from both Danish officials and Greenlanders about any takeover or control over the territory.

As tensions escalate, European allies have already pledged support for Greenland, signifying a unified front against unilateral US actions. Denmark's military expansion in Greenland will be carried out in close cooperation with allies to maintain regional security amidst geopolitical strains.
