Two suicide bombers have attacked the headquarters of a Pakistani paramilitary force on Monday, killing three security officials and wounding at least 12 people.
Police reported that the attackers were armed as they charged at the Federal Constabulary's headquarters in Peshawar, located in north-western Pakistan. Despite the high security level surrounding the constabulary’s complex, the assailants managed to breach barriers before the attack.
Witnesses heard two loud explosions around 08:10 local time (03:10 GMT), and the area has been cordoned off with rescue teams on site. Reports indicate that five security officials and seven civilians sustained injuries during the attack.
Pakistan authorities described the incident as a foiled terrorist plot, emphasizing that the attackers were gunned down at the gate before they could enter the building. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged for the apprehension of those behind the attack.
The Federal Constabulary, responsible for addressing events beyond police capabilities, faces ongoing challenges in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which has been a hotspot for militant activity, particularly from the Pakistani Taliban. This group, also known as Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, has claimed responsibility for similar attacks across the country.
