Three people - including two police officers - have been killed in an explosion in Moscow, Russian authorities have reported.
The officers, identified as Ilya Klimanov, 24, and Maxim Gorbunov, 25, approached a suspicious individual near a police car on Yeletskaya Street. As they attempted to detain the suspect, an explosive device detonated.
Both Klimanov and Gorbunov succumbed to their injuries at the scene, alongside another bystander.
The explosion took place near the location where Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was assassinated in a car bombing earlier in the week, leading to heightened concerns over security in the city.
According to the Investigative Committee's spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko, a criminal investigation is underway focusing on the attempted murder of the officers.
Alexander, a resident living nearby, recounted the incident saying, There was an explosion, it was a loud bang - like with the car a few days ago.
While Russia has hinted at potential Ukrainian involvement concerning Sarvarov's assassination, it remains uncertain if the two events are interconnected.
Sarvarov was a key figure in the armed forces' operational training department and marks the third military official to be killed in bomb attacks in Moscow within the last year.
