Campus fallout after a contested rape claim

Lovely Professional University (LPU), one of India’s largest private institutions, is grappling with a crisis that began on 27 September when rumors of an alleged rape reached students across the 600‑acre campus.

The claim, circulated widely through student WhatsApp groups, was never corroborated by police or confirmed by an identified victim. Nonetheless, police opened an FIR under the Indian Penal Code and formed a special investigation team, noting that the evidence from CCTV cameras remains inconclusive.

Protests erupted into a chaotic scene: the National Highway 44 was blocked for more than 15 hours, police vehicles were torched, and riots spilled beyond LPU gates. Students, fearing for safety, left their rooms with knives and rulers, while the university’s attempt to defuse tensions—releasing a video of students denying the claim—backfired and deepened the distrust.

As a result, LPU has suspended classes for ten days and urged the roughly 10,000 students living on campus to return home. The Punjab State Women’s Commission has requested the FIR files and details of the safety plan for displaced students.

With the campus now heavily policed, the investigation faces a difficult dual task: mapping who–if anyone–committed the alleged assault and determining the actors responsible for the ensuing violence that cost lives and property.

Court‑ordered investigations, media scrutiny and social media uproar continue to shape the narrative. LPU’s trajectory in the coming weeks will be watched closely as the institution seeks to restore trust and deliver answers in the face of a highly volatile campus environment.
