Argentina’s President has warned that he will take legal action against the UK unless the Sea Lion oil exploration near the Falkland Islands stops.
President Javier Milei set a two‑week deadline for the British‑Israeli venture to abandon its plans, invoking 'illegal plundering' of Argentine resources.
The Sea Lion project, located about 130 miles (209 km) from the islands, is estimated to hold 1.7 billion barrels of oil. Companies Rockhopper Exploration (UK) and Navitas Petroleum (Israel) claim valid licences from the Falkland authorities.
If the deadline passes, Mile‑i will seek arbitration at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg and could take the dispute to the UN, which the president has slammed as ineffective.
The move follows a 1982 war that left 255 British lives, 3 islanders, and 649 Argentine lives lost, and a 2013 referendum in which 99.8% of Falkland residents voted to remain a British overseas territory.
