Apple announced it has filed a federal lawsuit against OpenAI, two of its former employees, and the design start‑up io Products, which was acquired by OpenAI last year. The court filing claims that former Apple staffers – senior electrical engineer Chang Liu and former iPhone & Apple Watch design vice president Tang Yew Tan – stole confidential documents and proprietary designs by emailing them to themselves when they joined the AI firm.
Apple further alleges that OpenAI’s hiring process encourages current Apple employees to bring proprietary hardware as “props” for interview panels, thereby extracting additional, unreleased information. According to the lawsuit, those actions were part of a deliberate strategy to extract Apple’s trade secrets and enable OpenAI’s entry into the consumer hardware market.
The complaint names io Products, the design start‑up founded by former Apple executive Jony Ive, as a co‑party in the lawsuit. Apple argues that the joint effort among OpenAI, its staffers and io Products creates an enterprise that “acts in concert and as an enterprise, exploiting Apple’s confidential information to advance OpenAI’s efforts.”
Apple claims it has presented evidence in February but was ignored, prompting the suit. The filing requests an immediate injunction to bar OpenAI from using or accessing any alleged confidential information, and seeks unspecified monetary damages.
In the backdrop of the lawsuit, Apple’s former CEO Tim Cook stepped aside this year after embedding ChatGPT into Apple devices. Apple shows a new AI partnership focus now on Google’s Gemini model, while OpenAI is preparing to launch its first hardware product – a keyboard designed for its AI ecosystem – later this month. The lawsuit and asset‑securing actions may signal a strategic pivot, as Apple seeks to protect its intellectual‑property moat against aggressive competition in the AI‑hardware arena.
