In brief

Recent airstrikes by Israel on Syria's coastal region mark the most intense military action since 2012, coinciding with the collapse of the Assad regime and shifting power dynamics.

Article text:Israel conducted a substantial series of airstrikes during the night on Syria’s coastal territory, according to reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. This marked an escalation in Israel’s military operations in response to the changing power dynamics in Syria after rebel forces recently claimed control of significant areas following the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad.The Syrian Observatory stated that the strikes were aimed at former positions of the Syrian military, specifically targeting air defense installations and missile storage facilities. Earlier in the day, another Israeli strike targeted radar systems at a military airport located in Deir al-Zour in eastern Syria. Described as “the most violent strikes in the area” since 2012, the airstrikes on the coastline represented a total of 18 individual bombings, which included substantial multiple explosions due to detonations of munitions stored in warehouses. While no casualty figures were reported immediately following the assaults, the impacts were significant enough to be classified as a major escalation. The Israeli military has typically refrained from commenting on individual strikes; however, officials have previously expressed continued commitment to preventing military assets from falling into the hands of what they term “extremist” groups. The Observatory noted that since the faltering of the Assad regime, Israel has conducted over 450 military operations against Syrian targets, significantly degrading the capabilities of the Syrian military.Israel has also extended its territorial claims, maintaining a presence in areas of Syria adjacent to the Golan Heights, which Israel captured during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. The Israeli government has recently advanced plans to expand settlements in the region, as part of a broader intention to bolster the population within the Golan Heights, which is deemed illegally occupied by many in the international community.Ahmed al-Shara, leader of the coalition now in control of rebel-governed Syria, criticized Israeli actions as unlawful territorial expansions. He pointed out the pressing need for Syria to prioritize recovery and stability over potential new conflicts, emphasizing that the country’s long-standing war injuries necessitate a move towards rebuilding and diplomatic resolutions instead of further military engagements.
