In brief

In a charged political climate, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. of the Philippines denounces assassination threats linked to Vice President Sara Duterte, who claimed she orchestrated a potential plot against him and others amid growing tensions.

Political turmoil in the Philippines has reached a new level as President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. addressed alarming claims made by Vice President Sara Duterte, who suggested she had arranged for his assassination in the event of her own death. During a video address on Monday, the president emphasized that he takes the situation very seriously, labeling the threats as “deeply concerning.” “Lately, there has been a surge of reckless threats, including alarming plans aimed at some of us,” he remarked, without directly implicating Duterte. He expressed concern over the ease with which life threats are made against a president, questioning the safety of ordinary citizens in such an atmosphere: “Such criminal intent should never be tolerated. I will not take this sitting down,” said Marcos. Heightened security measures were implemented for the president, following Duterte's unsettling claim made just two days prior during a virtual briefing. In her statement, she alleged that she had taken steps to arrange for the murders of Marcos, his wife Liza, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez, who is related to the president. However, Duterte later contended that her comments were “maliciously taken out of logical context.” As the situation escalated, the Department of Justice announced it would issue a subpoena to Duterte, giving her five days to clarify her comments to investigators. Jesse Andres, an undersecretary in the Justice Department, stated that the “premeditated plot to assassinate the president” would face legal ramifications. The political dynamics between the two leaders, once seen as a formidable alliance, now seem precariously fragile amidst these alarming accusations and the potential legal fallout.
