In brief
Club dei 27, an elite gathering of Verdi admirers in Italy, celebrates the composer's legacy in a unique way, waiting for a member's passing to welcome new ones, reinforcing a strong bond among its male members.
In the heart of Parma, Italy, a unique organization thrives, known as Club dei 27, where members come together to honor the renowned opera composer Giuseppe Verdi. Recently, this male-only society marked the composer’s birthday in an unconventional style by initially serenading him with "Va Pensiero," a cherished chorus from Verdi's opera, “Nabucco,” rather than singing the customary “Happy Birthday.” The chorus was performed by a diverse group of attendees including professionals like bankers, surgeons, and a vegetable vendor, united by their profound admiration for Verdi, who was born in the vicinity. Club dei 27 is exclusive; a male can only join when another member passes away or retires, resulting in a lengthy waiting list. "When we receive a new request, we touch wood to avoid any unfortunate events," president Enzo Petrolini remarked, mixing jest with the somber reality of the club's criteria. This club should not be confused with the infamous 27 Club, associated with musicians who met an early demise. For Club dei 27, however, the focus is on longevity and celebration of life. At this year's gathering, marking the 211th anniversary of Verdi's birth, Petrolini proposed a toast filled with commendations for the maestro, met with spirited cheers of “Viva Verdi” from the attendees. The celebrations highlight not just a reverence for Verdi’s legacy but also the camaraderie that is forged amongst those who share a passion for his operatic contributions to the world.
