In brief

Shiu Ka-chun, who transformed his own prison experiences into advocacy work for Hong Kong's incarcerated activists, has died aged 55 after battling stomach cancer. Known for his dedication to the rights of the marginalized, Shiu's tragic passing marks the loss of a formidable figure in the pro-democracy movement.

Shiu Ka-chun, a former social worker turned pro-democracy lawmaker and tireless advocate for incarcerated activists, passed away on Friday in Hong Kong at the age of 55 due to stomach cancer, as confirmed by his wife, Kelly Hui. His death signals a poignant loss to the community he served throughout his life.Born on June 3, 1969, in a working-class family, Mr. Shiu dedicated his professional life to championing the rights of the marginalized. After studying social work at Hong Kong Baptist University, he initially worked with youths before transitioning to academia as a lecturer. In 2007, he gained recognition for his engaging teaching methods and insightful commentary that addressed pressing social issues.Shiu became increasingly involved in activism during the 2014 Occupy Central movement, which advocated for democratic reforms in Hong Kong. He mobilized social workers and organized discussions among individuals with disabilities and the homeless, fostering a dialogue about the importance of democracy for all citizens. His dedication to social welfare and civil rights led to his election as a lawmaker in 2016, where he fought tirelessly against poverty, homelessness, and advocated for better living conditions for the elderly and disabled. However, his commitment to activism led to consequences; in 2019, he was sentenced to eight months in prison for public nuisance related to his participation in the Occupy protests.Once released, Shiu became a vocal supporter of those jailed in the wake of a national security crackdown initiated by Beijing. His work aided countless imprisoned protesters, helping to amplify their plight and advocate for reforms. As one of the last remaining voices advocating for social justice in post-protest Hong Kong, Shiu's passion and commitment will be deeply missed by many. His passing is not only a loss for his family and friends but for all those who fight for democracy and justice in the now increasingly oppressive political landscape of Hong Kong.
