The local prosecutor's office confirmed that the dismembered heads belonged to male victims and indicated that an investigation is underway, as reported by news agency AFP. The region, known for drug trafficking and fuel smuggling – often referred to as "huachicoleo" – is said to generate billions annually for criminal organizations. So far, there has been no response from federal authorities regarding this grisly event.

This violent act comes at a time when the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum has intensified efforts to curb fentanyl trafficking, an issue that has plagued the country for years. Notably, Puebla and Tlaxcala have remained relatively unaffected by the extreme cartel violence that has become prevalent in other parts of Mexico.

Recent months have seen various acts of brutality in Mexico, including the discovery of twenty decapitated bodies in Sinaloa and a tragic shooting incident during a Catholic Church festivities in Guanajuato that left seven young individuals dead. The ongoing violence between gangs has significantly escalated since the government's military engagement with cartels began in 2006, leading to widespread loss of life and an alarming number of missing persons.
