Dublin Takes Action to Safeguard Iconic Molly Malone Statue
The city introduces stewards and restoration efforts to protect its beloved folk figure from tourist wear and tear.
In a bid to protect one of its iconic symbols, the Dublin City Council is set to implement new measures for the Molly Malone statue, a beloved figure deeply etched in Irish folklore. The life-size bronze statue, depicting the sweet-faced Molly, a cockles and mussels vendor, has become a popular spot for both locals and tourists, particularly during festive occasions. However, the council has responded to increasing complaints regarding the statue's upkeep, specifically in relation to visitors frequently touching its breasts for luck, which has resulted in noticeable damage to the bronze over time.
To address this issue, the city plans to position stewards near the statue during a dedicated week in May. These wardens will serve a dual purpose: not only protecting the statue from further harm but also educating tourists about its historical significance and promoting respectful engagement. This initiative is part of a broader community campaign dubbed “Leave Molly mAlone,” spearheaded by Tilly Cripwell, a 23-year-old Trinity College Dublin student and a frequent performer on Suffolk Street.
In addition to the deployment of stewards, Dublin City Council will also embark on repairing the statue's bust, which has faced discolouration due to excessive contact. These actions reflect the city's commitment to preserving the cultural integrity of one of its most cherished landmarks while fostering a more respectful atmosphere for visitors eager to connect with Dublin's rich heritage. With St. Patrick’s Day celebrations attracting crowds from all over, the timing for these protective measures couldn’t be more crucial.
