A British citizen is in custody in Namibia facing multiple charges for allegedly taking inappropriate photographs of children.
The arrest of Douglas Robert Brook, a 65-year-old British national, has sparked outrage in Namibia, where he faces serious allegations of sexually molesting children and capturing nude photographs of minors. The police report indicates Brook is accused of targeting vulnerable boys and girls from the indigenous San community in the central Otjozondjupa region during his holiday visit.
Brook has been charged with 38 counts, including rape, indecent assault, and child exploitation. He reportedly arrived in Namibia just last week, and was taken into custody on Sunday after allegedly luring 34 young children with sweets and money to take nude photographs of them. The UK Foreign Office confirmed that they are in contact with local authorities regarding Brook's arrest.
According to local media, police uncovered some of the explicit photos on the suspect's camera, which was seized during his arrest. Maureen Mbeha, a police chief in the region, stated that the accused had sexually exploited 16 teenage girls and 14 boys. During his Tuesday appearance at the Grootfontein Magistrate's court, Brook was denied bail and remains in custody with hearings postponed to allow for further investigation.
The Namibian Ministry of Environment and Tourism expressed strong disapproval of the incident, labeling it as a "deeply disrespectful" act towards the cultural heritage of the San community. They firmly condemned any form of exploitation or objectification of indigenous peoples and their children, regardless of the perpetrator’s nationality.
Namibia, known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural background, has recently faced dark moments involving exploitative tourism practices, heightening concerns over the treatment of local communities.
