According to the Merseyside Police, reports began filtering in to emergency services as witnesses observed a dark vehicle barreling into revelers. Disturbing video footage shows the car making contact with parade-goers, with many rushing to assist those who fell or were trapped underneath the vehicle. Despite attempts by bystanders to intervene, the driver accelerated away after briefly stopping.
Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims addressed the incident during a news conference, stating, "We believe this to be an isolated incident and we are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with it." She added that a 53-year-old local man has been arrested in connection to the ramming.
In terms of casualties, 47 people reported injuries ranging from minor to serious, with four children among the injured. Emergency services reported that 27 of these victims were hospitalized for treatment, including one child who was seriously hurt. Other injured parties were treated on-site.
