Tragic Bus Accident in Kenya Claims 25 Lives After Funeral
A bus returning from a funeral in Kenya has overturned, resulting in the tragic deaths of 25 mourners.
The harrowing incident occurred along the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway on Friday afternoon, revealing the persistent danger of road travel in the region. Local authorities reported that the bus driver lost control of the vehicle, which subsequently veered off the road and overturned into a ditch. The passengers, primarily from one family, were returning from a burial at Nyahera when the tragedy unfolded.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, where 10 men, 10 women, and one girl were declared dead at the site of the accident. Despite immediate medical attention, four individuals succumbed to their injuries in hospitals, raising the total death toll to 25. Additionally, about 20 other passengers suffered injuries, with five of those being in serious condition.
The bus, normally used for transporting secondary school students, was repurposed for the funeral, and no students were aboard at the time. The route from Nyahera to Nyakach spans approximately 62 kilometers (38.5 miles).
In light of the calamity, Kenya's Ministry of Health has initiated an urgent blood drive to support the survivors and conveyed condolences to the affected families. Furthermore, President William Ruto used social media platform X to call for immediate accountability for negligence leading to the crash and emphasized the need to address traffic violations and enhance road safety.
The National Transport and Safety Authority of Kenya will be collaborating with local law enforcement to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. This incident comes in the wake of several other tragic road and air accidents this week in Kenya, underscoring the critical state of transport safety in the country. Between 2020 and 2021, road fatalities in Kenya surged by over 20%, with more than 4,500 people losing their lives annually due to such accidents.
