A 17-year-old armed with a shotgun was subdued by passengers just before takeoff from Avalon Airport in Australia.
A chaotic scene unfolded at Avalon Airport near Melbourne when a 17-year-old, armed with a shotgun and ammunition, attempted to take control of a Jetstar flight. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon as the aircraft was preparing for takeoff with 160 passengers on board. Eyewitness reports suggest that the teenager breached security by climbing over a fence to reach the tarmac, ultimately making his way onto the plane's front steps.
As soon as he stepped onto the aircraft, passengers and crew recognized the immediate danger, with the teen being tackled to the ground near the entrance. The quick action by three passengers, who overpowered the armed suspect, prevented what could have been a grave situation. Video footage showed a crew member and a pilot working to remove the suspect's utility belt, while the pilot bravely kicked the shotgun away from the teenager, whose bright fluorescent jacket initially masked his intentions.
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, is currently in the custody of Victoria Police and faces eight charges, including unlawfully attempting to control an aircraft and creating a bomb hoax. Authorities have brought in bomb specialists to search a nearby car and two bags linked to the suspect, highlighting the serious nature of the incident.
Superintendent Michael Reid lauded the courage of passengers for their prompt responses that ensured everyone onboard remained unharmed. He confirmed ongoing communication with counterterrorism units, although the motive behind the teenager's actions remains uncertain.
One passenger, Barry Clark, recounted how he noticed the suspect's agitation and took it upon himself to disarm him, stating he felt a responsibility to keep the situation from escalating. Despite the distressing circumstances, officials assure that no injuries occurred during the incident.
In response to the event, Jetstar expressed gratitude to those who acted bravely and is cooperating fully with law enforcement agencies for a thorough investigation. Avalon Airport, which predominantly services Jetstar flights, has since reopened following the incident.
