Harvard's Independence at Stake as Trump Administration Cuts Funding

In a letter to Education Secretary Linda McMahon, Garber expressed Harvard's commitment to combat antisemitism and discrimination, while criticizing the administration’s decision to revoke over $2 billion in federal funding. He argued that such funding cuts threaten Harvard’s independence and hinder its ability to implement necessary reforms. Despite acknowledging the Department of Education's concerns, Garber stated that Harvard would pursue its own course of action regarding compliance with federal expectations.

The Trump administration swiftly responded to Garber’s stance by cutting an additional $450 million in grants, emphasizing that federal funds should not support universities accused of neglecting civil rights.
