Jagdeep Dhankhar's Sudden Resignation Raises Eyebrows in Indian Politics
The unexpected exit of India's Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has ignited widespread intrigue about the underlying reasons.
India's Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar submitted his resignation on Monday evening, a move that took many by surprise given the timing during the start of the monsoon session of Parliament. Citing health concerns, Dhankhar’s announcement has fueled speculation regarding potential political ramifications. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which nominated him for the vice-presidential post, has remained silent on the matter.
Dhankhar, who took office in August 2022 with a term extending until 2027, had earlier presided over a session of the Rajya Sabha, where he swore in new members. The session also included the submission of an impeachment notice against Judge Yashwant Varma concerning allegations of cash found at his residence. Judge Varma has firmly denied any wrongdoing.
In his resignation letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar stated his intention to "prioritize health care and abide by medical advice." He expressed his pride in serving during a significant phase of India's economic development. However, the abrupt timing of his resignation led to astonishment and speculation among political analysts and opposition leaders alike.
Anand Dubey, spokesperson for the Shiv Sena (UBT), questioned the transparency surrounding Dhankhar's resignation, suggesting that discussions might have been sidestepped. Meanwhile, Manish Tewari of the Congress party labeled the move as “totally unexpected,” highlighting the possibility of deeper issues beyond health concerns.
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh noted the absence of two ministers from an important meeting held by Dhankhar that day, implying a potential organizational breakdown within the vice-presidency.
Dhankhar, a trained lawyer who initially entered politics as an MP in 1989, had a tenure marked by tensions during his time as the governor of West Bengal before his elevation to vice president. Despite undergoing surgery earlier this year, he had swiftly returned to his duties.
With the vice-presidential role now vacant, responsibilities will likely shift to the deputy chairperson of the Rajya Sabha or another appointed member. Political circles continue to buzz with speculation as to the future implications of Dhankhar's quick departure.
