Vietnamese Beauty Queen Arrested for Promoting Fraudulent Fiber Gummies
Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien, a former Miss Grand International, faces legal consequences after endorsing counterfeit health supplements.
In a shocking turn of events, Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien, crowned Miss Grand International in 2021, has been arrested by Vietnamese authorities for her involvement in a consumer fraud case linked to counterfeit fiber gummies. The beauty queen and social media influencer heavily advertised Kera Supergreens Gummies, claiming they were rich in fiber and beneficial for health. However, an independent public testing revealed that the product contained a mere 16mg of fiber per gummy, starkly contrasting the promoted 200mg.
The scandal began when a concerned member of the public sent the gummies for laboratory analysis, prompting authorities to investigate the authenticity of the product. Results pointed to the use of substandard ingredients, revealing the gummies had not only low fiber content but also failed to disclose a high level of sorbitol, a component commonly found in laxatives.
Nguyen Tien collaborated with fellow influencers Pham Quang Linh and Hang Du Muc to promote the product, presenting a joint venture that later unraveled into legal troubles. While all three influencers were initially fined in March and issued public apologies, the situation escalated when authorities arrested Linh and Muc, along with company officials responsible for the gummies' production, on charges of producing counterfeit goods.
Now, Ms. Nguyen has joined her associates in facing criminal allegations of deceiving customers. Before the product's sales were halted due to the controversy, over 100,000 boxes had been sold, marking a significant consumer trust breach. Following her beauty pageant win, Nguyen became a prominent figure in Vietnam's media landscape, appearing on various reality shows and gaining accolades from governmental bodies, including commendations from the prime minister and Vietnam's Communist Party. This scandal poses a challenging chapter for the celebrated beauty queen and her career in public life.
