Activist Mahmoud Khalil Claims Trump Era Efforts to Quell Pro-Palestinian Voices Have Failed
Following his release from immigration detention, Columbia University activist Mahmoud Khalil asserts that attempts to silence pro-Palestinian advocates under the Trump administration have not succeeded.
Columbia University activist Mahmoud Khalil emerged victorious from immigration detention on Saturday, declaring that the Trump administration's attempts to silence pro-Palestinian voices have ultimately been unsuccessful. Khalil, who was detained for over three months, addressed reporters in Newark, New Jersey, after his release from a facility in Louisiana. "My existence is a message," he affirmed, asserting that the administration failed to stifle advocates for Palestinian rights.
Khalil gained notoriety last year for his role in organizing pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia, with his arrest on March 8 triggering rallies in major cities like New York and Washington D.C. While the US government seeks to deport him, citing his activism as a potential threat to foreign policy, Khalil remains undeterred. He emphasized his commitment to advocating for Palestinian rights along with the plight of fellow immigrants still detained.
Upon his release, Khalil, who was pushing a pram carrying his newborn son—born while he was incarcerated—expressed gratitude for the support he received and rallied for the rights of others. "Free Palestine," he shouted, receiving flowers from supporters who gathered to welcome him back.
Joining him at the airport was Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who lauded Khalil's release as indicative of a failing legal strategy by the Trump administration regarding the deportation of migrant activists. She criticized the government for violating legal norms in its deportation efforts, suggesting they are using these instances to intimidate other advocates.
Khalil's freedom follows a judge's decision that deemed him neither a flight risk nor a danger to the community amidst ongoing immigration proceedings. However, the Trump administration has expressed dissatisfaction with the ruling and intends to appeal, arguing that the local New Jersey judge lacked jurisdiction over the case. White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson stated, "We expect to be vindicated on appeal." As the legal battle continues, Khalil remains resolute in his mission to support both Palestinian rights and the rights of immigrants across the nation.
