Unlike most of his predecessors, he chose not to be interred within St Peter's Basilica, opting instead for a burial in a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary in central Rome.

Following his death, the Pope's apartments have been sealed with wax, marking the beginning of a period known as Sede Vacante, which signifies the vacancy of the papal seat until a new leader is elected. Pope Francis's last public appearance was on Easter Sunday, where he addressed the congregation briefly from a wheelchair. His body lay in prayerful repose at his residence before the transfer to St Peter’s Basilica, marking a poignant chapter in the history of the Catholic Church.
