A major rescue operation is currently in progress after an avalanche occurred on Eiger mountain in the Swiss Alps, with several individuals believed to be buried beneath the snow. The incident took place shortly after midday on Saturday, prompting Bern Cantonal police to mobilize multiple rescue teams to aid in the search and retrieval efforts.

The avalanche struck at the popular tourist destination known for its breathtaking views and treacherous climbing routes. Eiger, standing at 3,967 meters (approximately 13,000 feet), is located near various renowned resorts including Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and Wengen. Its north face is particularly well-known among mountaineering enthusiasts, often regarded as one of the most difficult climbs globally.
