Pavel Durov to Leave $13.9 Billion Fortune to Over 100 Children
Telegram founder shares unique inheritance plan for his large family
In a surprising announcement, Pavel Durov, the founder of the widely-used messaging app Telegram, declared that his estimated $13.9 billion (£10.3 billion) fortune will be inherited by over 100 children he has fathered. Durov emphasized that all his offspring will have equal rights to his wealth, stating, "They are all my children and will all have the same rights! I don't want them to tear each other apart after my death," in an interview with the French political magazine Le Point.
Durov is the official father of six children with three different partners. However, through sperm donations to a fertility clinic, he has expanded his parental roster to over 100. In an unconventional approach to wealth distribution, he has decided that his children will not have access to their inheritance for 30 years, aiming to encourage them to develop independence and self-reliance. "I want them to live like normal people, to build themselves up alone," Durov explained.
The 40-year-old entrepreneur, who has faced serious criminal charges in France, revealed that he has written a will due to the dangers associated with his work, which involves advocating for personal freedoms. He underscored the risks of his profession by stating that "defending freedoms earns you many enemies, including within powerful states."
Durov, who was arrested in France last year, has been accused of failing to adequately moderate the app against criminal activities, including drug trafficking and child sexual abuse content. He fiercely denied these allegations, describing them as "totally absurd" and insisting that merely because criminals use his platform does not make him a criminal.
Through Telegram, Durov has amassed a user base of over a billion each month, and he continues to focus on the platform's privacy-oriented offerings amid the controversies surrounding it.
