WHO Calls Out Israeli Military Actions Amid Gaza Crisis

The WHO labels Israeli strikes in Gaza as detrimental to humanitarian efforts amid escalating violence.

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has intensified, with WHO reporting significant harm to its operations following attacks on its facilities.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has condemned recent military actions by Israel in central Gaza, stating that these operations have severely hindered its humanitarian efforts. The agency has reported attacks on its facilities in Deir al-Balah, including a residence for staff and its main warehouse, which was destroyed during the Israeli offensive on Monday.

In a statement, the WHO accused Israeli forces of not only damaging its facilities but also of mistreating those sheltering in the staff residence. The agency reported that one of its staff members was detained during the attack, calling for their immediate release. The Israeli military responded by stating that it had detained individuals suspected of terrorist activities in the region but noted that these individuals were released shortly thereafter.

This military action represents the first substantial ground movement by Israel in Deir al-Balah, displacing tens of thousands and escalating fears of a humanitarian crisis. The Hamas-controlled health ministry reported at least 33 deaths from malnutrition in the last two days, emphasizing the dire conditions as reports of increased malnutrition among civilians arise.

As concerns mount, the UK and 27 other nations have condemned Israel for what they termed "inhumane killing" of civilians seeking aid. The Israeli military has ordered the evacuation of several city blocks in southern Deir al-Balah amid its ongoing operations aimed at dismantling what they claim are terrorist infrastructures.

The WHO's response highlighted attacks on its facilities that occurred multiple times, stating that the traumatic impact on staff and families has been severe. The agency warned that ongoing assaults on health facilities have reached a critical point, making it extremely challenging to maintain essential health services for over two million residents of Gaza.

The effectiveness of Israeli military operations remains unclear; however, it is reported that Israeli forces are trying to create a corridor through the city to isolate it from the south. Additionally, reports indicate that the ongoing violence has resulted in multiple fatalities, including women and children in bombings targeting refugee camps and makeshift shelters.

As international humanitarian conditions worsen, the United Nations has called for immediate action to address the escalating crisis. Amid destruction and loss, local voices express despair. "Gaza is a place of death, hunger, and exhaustion," stated a teacher and displaced mother, highlighting the dire situation faced by residents.

The brutal conflict, initiated as a response to a Hamas-led attack on October 7, has resulted in a staggering death toll of over 59,029 people in Gaza, with international calls for protection of civilians intensifying amid growing reports of human rights violations.
